Johnny Manziel has fallen behind veteran Brian Hoyer in the race to start Week 1 for the Browns and even Johnny Football believes he should have much smaller goals in training camp. Manziel said he isn't focusing on the quarterback competition at the moment and is focussed on memorizing his playbook.

Manziel spoke after Thursday’s practice session and said that he is facing a learning curve from his college playbook and it will take some time for him to have the whole thing down to a science.

"It's a process for me," Manziel said. "It's not something that I should just come in here naturally because I played well in college and just know how to run this offense.

"It's a complete 180 from everything that I've been used to. And it's going to take time. It's a process coming from a spread, air raid system in college to a pro style system that's very unfamiliar [to] me as far as terminology and routes.”

Manziel believes there can be no true quarterback competition until he gets the playbook down and he wants to have consecutive days without errors before having conversations about starting.

"I'm not worried about one or the other being ahead right now," Manziel said "It's me making sure I know what I need to know, getting out there and running the offense and not having any mistakes. Once I go through a couple days with non-mental errors or getting to where I need to be every single time, then I'll feel a lot better.”

Manziel went on to say that he believes in the coaching staff and whenever they decide that he is ready to lead the team is the right time in his eyes. Many players and members of the media believe that Hoyer has the inside track on Manziel and will be the Week 1 starter barring injury.
