Serena Williams' victory in her first competitive match Wednesday following her Wimbledon incident answered some questions.
Serena Williams sticks with her story that she was really just under the weather at Wimbledon
But the media have been given the green light to keep asking.
USA TODAY Sports reported that Williams considers herself moving in a positive direction after a 7-5, 6-2 win over 45th-ranked Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic at the Bank of the West Classic. She'll face the winner of the match between No. 5 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Carol Zhao of Canada in Friday's quarterfinal round.
Her match against Pliskova lasted 64 minutes.
Serena Williams proclaims herself renewed, tells her coach to get ready for her return
"I'm on the right path, working on some new things and really excited," top-ranked Williams said on court. "I'm looking forward to the next match. ... I think there's room for improvement. But I think I'm going in the right direction."
As far as her bizarre on-court behavior during her July 1 doubles match with sister Venus at Wimbledon, Serena said she's put the incident behind her.
"I've moved on so I'm just doing things that I think I do best," she said. "If anyone has any questions they're more than welcome to ask."
Not that she's going to change her answers. Williams already has said she really was just sick and will undergo more tests after next month's U.S. Open. She is unlikely to divulge anything beyond that.
"I think it's always a re-set after the French-Wimbledon," she said. "I think every player almost takes a deep breath and then gets ready for the last swing of big tournaments."
It was Tennis Channel commentator Lindsay Davenport, a former No. 1 player herself, who said that Williams "had answered a lot of questions tonight."
But they likely were not the ones to the questions she's been asked most since her Wimbledon scene.
