Penn State currently holds the No. 5 2015 recruiting class and landed five-star defensive end Shane Simmons for the 2016 class, but when to recruitment offensive line coach Herb Hand pulls no punches.
Hand recently dropped his recruitment of an unnamed recruit after he wasn't comfortable with the player’s social media history. In classic Hand style, he took to his own social media to post his opinion on social media.
Dropped another prospect this AM due to his social media presence...Actually glad I got to see the 'real' person before we offered him.
— Herb Hand (@CoachHand) July 30, 2014
Hand has echoed this message on many occasions and received more clarification on his stance in an interview with Kipp Adams of 247Sports.
“If a guy makes the decision to post or RT stuff that degrades women, references drug use or cyber-bullying crap, then I can make the decision to drop them. Especially if I have discussed it with them prior, and especially in today's climate of athletics.”
Hand’s treatment of social media isn’t a new idea, but he is one of the first to publicly state when he has dropped recruitment of a player. If anything, Hand’s tweet should be a warning to any potential recruit to clean up their social media pages on the chance that someone of authority is watching.
