New York Giants running back David Wilson left practice Tuesday and will undergo further tests after suffering what is being called a ‘burner’ on his surgically repaired neck.

Wilson will be evaluated by Dr. Frank Cammisa at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Wednesday and has been ruled out of practice until at least next week. Wilson will miss the Giants preseason opener in Canton, Ohio on Sunday and will be reevaluated for Week 2 of scrimmage action.

Coach Tom Coughlin called the situation a ‘bummer’ and is hoping for good news concerning the Giants 2012 first-round pick.

"We were all praying that it would not be an issue, that he would be able to come back and go to work," Coughlin said Tuesday. "But we'll see.”

If Wilson cannot go, the Giants will turn to the other players in their stable of running backs. Peyton Hillis, free agent acquisition Rashad Jennings and rookie out of Boston College Andre Williams are next up for the Giants.

Jennings was the Giants major free agency signing and is expected to play a major role regardless of Wilson’s availability. Williams will be given his chances to shine and is a large downhill runner that compares to former Giant Brandon Jacobs. Hillis on the other hand is fighting for a roster spot and will use the added reps in Wilson’s absence to boost his claim.

The Giants ranked 29th in the league in rushing in 2013 and averaged only 83.2 yards per game on the ground.
