With this contract extension, Peterson becomes the highest paid corner in the NFL and surpasses the deals that the Cleveland Browns' Joe Haden (five years, $68 million) and Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman (four years, $56 million) received earlier this offseason.

Peterson and the Cardinals have been negotiating a contract extension for most of the offseason, but it wasn’t until Friday that the talks heated up. Soon after the two sides met last week, a new deal was inevitable before the season’s start.

Peterson has done it all for the Cardinals in his three seasons as he has 12 career interceptions as well as four punt return touchdowns from his rookie season. Peterson has also played on offense for Arizona and is the first defensive player since the merger to have a reception and completion in the same game.
