David Ortiz is the best hitter in Boston Red Sox history outside of Ted Williams, at least in the book of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.
After Big Papi passed Yas on baseball's all-time home run list, many Red Sox fans wondered whether Ortiz has passed the franchise's career leader in most hitting categories.
But according to Yastrzemski, Ortiz is better than him because he had more power than he ever had. As quoted by Boston Globe: "I would say as a hitter, I would say he's next to Ted.'
Yastrzemski spent his entire MLB career with the Red Sox, helping the franchise capture a couple of AL pennants. He was an All-Star in 18 seasons and was named the league MVP. He also won the Triple Crown. He is ranked first in many offensive categories like RBIs, run, and hits (3,419).
On Monday, Ortiz scored two home runs against the Toronto Blue Jays to give him 455 for his career. He has also passed Yas for 36th place all-time.
While Ortiz will never be able to play 23 seasons like Yas did, he has three World Series championships to boast of.
Yastrzemski likewise acknowledged that being a designated hitter is difficult. Ortiz has spent a good part of his career as a DH. Said Yas: " DH-ing is very difficult, and he seems to have mastered it. It's not that easy. When I DH-ed my last year, I hated it.
He added: "To go to the plate and get yourself mentally prepared, it's not easy to do when you're not in the game. You're watching the game, and then all of a sudden, it's like, 'Boom,' you've got to go up there. I give him a lot of credit."
