Italian Vincenzo Nibali, the current leader of the Tour de France, admits he is superstitious but that is not enough for him to wear the same jersey throughout the entire race.
Speaking to AFP, Nibali said that contrary to rumors, he has changed his shirt: "I haven't used only two, I've used a few more than that."
He added: "Anyway, on hot days I had a lighter jersey but due to superstition I've tried to always use the same ones, although I've changed them a few times because they have to be washed but also for the sponsors' logo to be clear."
Nibali has been dominating the race in spectacular fashion that he now leads second placer Thibaut Pinot of France by more than seven minutes. He has won four stages in this tour, including the 18th stage to all but wrap up the overall championship. Yet he remains wary of his opponents and says he would not take risks so that he could hold on to the yellow jersey until the end of the tour.
"It's not a case of there being many risks and I have lots of time in hand. But I want to honor the jersey, my team, the Tour and everyone. It's important to try to do well and I will ride the way the leader of the Tour should."
Nibali adds that he's happy that the tour has not been involved in any doping scandal thus far. "It's not just important for me, it's important for everyone, for the riders, for the fans, for the media writing stories every day in the newspapers for those who can't be present on the Tour."
