The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially signed No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins to a rookie contract. With the signing, the Cavaliers cannot trade Wiggins for 30 days, thus postponing any potential deal for Minnesota’s Kevin Love.
It was widely believed that the Cavaliers would sign the No. 1 overall pick and wait the 30 days to make him available to trade. Wiggins is the center piece of any potential deal the Cavaliers offer the Minnesota Timberwolves as they continue their pursuit of All-Star Kevin Love.
The question for Wiggins, now that he signed his rookie deal, will he be dealt to Minnesota once the 30 days is up? ESPN’s Seerat Sohi believes that bringing Love to the Cavaliers makes them better right now, but Wiggins’ potential could be too good to pass on.
"To be a fan of an up-and-comer is to hope that things go right. To be a fan of a contender is to pray nothing goes wrong. In essence, optimism is more fun than anxiety.
Of course, trading Love for Wiggins isn’t as extreme. Any team featuring LeBron is bound to be a contender, but a trade for Love shifts the team’s focus from salivating over the sheer possibilities to figuring out how to fix the pipes. It’s already prominent in most trade discussions. The questions that skew heavy in a LeBron-Love-Kyrie Irving scenario -- How will they defend? How will they shore up their frontcourt depth? -- are surprisingly absent when you replace Love with Wiggins.”
Wiggins’ rookie deal is worth $5.5 million that will last only two years.
