Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has been suspended two games by the NFL for allegedly striking his then-fiancée unconscious. Rice was also fined fined $58,000 and is subject to more punishment if he finds himself in any more trouble in the near future.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Rice’s suspension will begin on August 30 and he will be eligible for reinstatement on September 12. The two games Rice will miss are against the Raven’s AFC North rivals Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rice pled not guilty to the charge and avoided trial by attending a pretrial program in May.

“Rice allegedly struck his then-fiancée unconscious in February while on a casino elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The three-time Pro Bowler pleaded not guilty to a third-degree charge of aggravated assault and avoided trial by being accepted into a pretrial intervention program in May.”

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that he expected a ruling from the NFL soon and that any punishment would be complicated.

"There are many sides to every story," Harbaugh said. "There are a lot of factors. There are other people involved; there are other disciplinary situations involved around the league.”

Rice is a first time offender in the NFL’s personal conduct policy and was likely given a lesser sentence because of it. Only 12 players have been suspended more than a month in the past three years and all those players were repeat offenders.

Rice is set to lose more than $470,000 due to the suspension.
