If Vitor Belfort didn't get a chance to take out Chael Sonnen at UFC 175, the Nevada State Athletic Commission did it for him on Wednesday.

5thround.com reported that the now-retired Sonnen was slapped with a 24-month suspension for failing a pair of random drug tests between May and July.

Sonnen was schedule to fight Belfort at the UFC 175 card on July 5, but abruptly dropped out and retired from MMA after testing positive for Anastrozole, Clomiphene and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), 5thround.com reported.

A subsequent random drug test in July showed traces of human growth hormone (HGH), recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) and hCG.

That test resulted in the dismissal of Sonnen from his duties as an MMA analyst with the UFC and Fox. But he avoided a $250,000 fine that was rumored to be a possibility.

5thround.com added that Sonnen had a history of breaking the rules during his MMA career. His legacy of cheating included a failed drug test after he lost to then-middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in August of 2010. 5thround.com reported that Sonnen was found with an artificial amount of testosterone in his system.

His testosterone/epitestosterone ratio of 16.9 to 1 was more than four times the legal limit determined by the California State Athletic Commission.

Sonnen came clean, so to speak, about his association with testosterone replacement therapy. 5thround.com reported that Sonnen revealed his recent drug-test failures were the result of his attempt to put an end to his TRT. He had claimed that he would've died without the treatment after the Nevada commission banned the synthetic substance earlier this year.

Sonnen has a 28-14-1 record that now appears to be complete.
