Tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium the New York Yankees (50-47) will play host to the last-place Texas Rangers (39-59) for a three-game set in the Bronx. Live stream the matchup tonight free by clicking this link; Yankees fans can hear the action on 101.9 WFAN FM while Rangers fans can listen to the radio broadcast on 103.3 ESPN. The Yankees will send Shane Greene (2-0, 1.32 ERA) to the mound while the Rangers counter with Miles Mikolas (0-2, 10.05 ERA).
Both teams have struggled mightily with injuries to the rotation, but the Rangers in particular have had that bug bite their lineup as well. Some of the Yankees' emergency fill-ins have performed well also, something captain Derek Jeter discussed with MLB.com.
"Any time guys go down to injury, it gives other guys opportunity," Jeter said. "When you have those opportunities, you need to make the most of it. (Greene's) done that. He's come out and thrown strikes and put us in a position to win every time he's pitched."
With four of their five Opening Day rotation members on the shelf, Greene has been called upon to contribute a great deal. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he's not surprised at all that Greene's succeeded so far.
"We were really excited about him in spring training and what he could possibly do for us," Girardi said. "We felt that he could help us at some point this year, and the time is now."
One player who has helped the Yanks stay alive as well is a normally injury-prone player-center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. He went 4-for-4 yesterday in the third game of a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds and scored the game-winning run. He faced six 100-plus mile an hour pitches from Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single.
"He can do anything on the baseball field. He showed all his tools today," catcher Brian McCann said of Ellsbury. "He does this on a nightly basis."
