Real Madrid Selling Isco To Liverpool To Make Room For James Rodriguez?
Despite Liverpool's ability to attract premier footballers to Anfield, the question remains as to whether the club can still attract the high-end players. Luis Suarez has departed and Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez opted to sign for Arsenal instead. Manager Brendan Rodgers, however, dismisses the notion that his club can't attract the cream of the crop.
"I don't think so. That was one where geography dictated where he [Sanchez] wanted to go. Simple as that," said Rodgers (via the Independent). "It's been the other way. Lots of players are really impressed by what we are doing as a club and really excited about coming to Liverpool. It wasn't due to a lack of ambition by the club. It was about where the player and his family wanted to choose to live."
Liverpool Release 33-Man Roster For U.S. Summer Tour
"He's a fantastic player and would have suited us. His profile would have been great but it was not to be and we move on."
Thus far in the summer transfer window, Liverpool have been able to sign Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert. According to Rodgers, more are on the way.
"The signings we have made have no relation to Luis going," he added. "These were players that were always earmarked to come in. We felt last year we just never had the depth and we are in the Champions League this year, so we have to ensure we have as strong a squad as possible. Obviously Luis going gives us the clout to go and spend more and we are getting the right type of player in, but we certainly won't spend just for the sake of spending. It has to be the sort of player who is going to improve us."
"We are working hard behind the scenes to find players, but it will not be a direct replacement. We are looking for several players who can add to what we have and improve us again."
