The much anticipated debut of San Francisco running back Marcus Lattimore will have to wait a little longer as the former South Carolina back will start training camp on the non-football injury list.

Lattimore has been on the shelf ever since suffering a gruesome knee injury in 2012 after rehabbing off another devastating knee injury in 2011. Lattimore had said in February that he felt very close to 100 percent and was expecting to be all systems go when training camp starts in late July.

The former South Carolina stud is expected to compete with rookie back Carlos Hyde and veteran Frank Gore for reps when he does find his way to the field. The 49ers play a run-heavy offense which is right up Lattimore’s alley.

Coach Jim Harbaugh has expressed faith in the rehab process, but many at NFL.com believe that the 49ers drafting Hyde was a sign that the organization isn't sold on Lattimore’s progress.

Lattimore played in only 29 games in his three-year college career, but when he has on the field he was absolutely stellar. Lattimore had 2,677 (4.8 yards per carry) yards rushing with 38 touchdowns and another 767 (10.4 yards per catch) yards with three touchdowns through the air.

The 49ers could come up with another steal in the NFL Draft if Lattimore can come back at 100 percent and contribute to the San Francisco running attack.
