Having already landed the services of Toni Kroos, Real Madrid will look to offload at least one midfield talent to make room for World Cup standout James Rodriguez. According to Paul Clennam and Jorge Martin (via Goal), that midfield talent is the talismanic Isco, with Liverpool sitting in the pole position to acquire his contract.
Real Madrid Purchase Goalkeeper Keylor Navas For €10 Million
The 22-year-old joined Madrid from Malaga last season and enjoyed a stellar maiden campaign. In 32 appearances with the club, he scored a modest eight goals, but created the second-most chances at the club (70). Only Angel Di Maria created more (90).
Similarly, Rodriguez was able to score nine goals and create 85 chances of his own at AS Monaco. The two are even separated by a meager nine months in age, with Rodriguez being the older of the two. Madrid are seemingly swapping one midfield talent for its identical counterpart.
Diego Lopez 'Not Going Anywhere,' Won't Make Room For Keylor Navas?
There is, however, one intangible Isco has over the Colombian star.
For all the goals and chances Rodriguez was able to create at AS Monaco, the fact remains: He was able to do so at AS Monaco. By no stretch of the imagination is Ligue 1 at the same level of the Spanish Liga. In a much tougher and complete competition, Isco has been able to climb the ranks at the club level. He even has the added benefit of singlehandedly leading Malaga on an improbable UEFA Champions League run in 2012.
Isco is proven. Rodriguez is not.
With the swap, Madrid would undoubtedly possess football's next brightest star, but it shouldn't come at the expense of one already shining so bright.
