Miguel Cotto's stunning performance vs. Sergio Martinez to take away "Maravilla's" WBC middleweight title opened many doors for him. His trainer Freddie Roach is trying to bust down the door to Canelo Alvarez and a big payday.

"Gaby [Pengaricano] asked me who I wanted, before Canelo fought Lara, and I told him I wanted Canelo for Cotto," Roach said.

"Canelo is still my number one choice. He's still the biggest on pay-per-view. I want him for Cotto because Cotto is up in years a bit, and I want him to make the most money for himself at this point. But Canelo might need one more fight, maybe two, to learn a bit more. He's a good fighter, but still very green. He's got a lot to learn."

Soon after Canelo's win over Erislandy Lara, Canelo's trainer Chepo Reynoso talked about a potential Cotto bout as if it were more of a 2015 option. "On Sunday we met with Oscar [De La Hoya] to discuss the future of Canelo. A fight with Cotto is a natural, but we probably should wait until May 2015," Reynoso said.

It's more likely that Cotto fights Timothy Bradley, which has been mentioned by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, although Roach voiced some concerns about that bout for Cotto.

"Tim is a tough guy, but I think he's too small," Roach said of Bradley. "Would Cotto fight him at 154? And then if Cotto beats him he's supposed to beat him."

Another name mentioned for Cotto is Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, who is scheduled to face Daniel Geale at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 26. Golovkin's name isn't at the star level yet, but he told SportsWorldNews.com that a win over Geale may change that for him.

"I think this fight will bring me to the upper level and at that point it will be much easier for my team to organize the much bigger fights," Golovkin said. "I'm obviously very interested in those fights [Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.]. If I win this fight it will be much easier to organize a fight with Miguel Cotto."
