Andre Johnson has officially asked for an exit from the Houston Texans after the two parties could not compromise on a $1 million bonus. Four teams have contacted the Texans concerning the possibility of a trade for the seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro.
Johnny Manziel Asked to Leave Nike Camp
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport was first to report the news and states the problem is a $1 million bonus that Johnson was attempting to earn back. Johnson told the Texans that he will attend all their offseason workouts despite not attending them in the early going. By missing the early workouts, Johnson cost himself a $1 million bonus that he would have earned if he attended. Johnson asked for a chance to earn the money back through extra workouts and the Texans declined.
Rapoport reports that Johnson is "not thinking about the Texans” as he continues to work out for the 2014 season. The bonus money combined with the fact that the Texans are entering a rebuild are the key elements to Johnson’s trade demands.
Richard Sherman Rips Michael Crabtree, Again
Four teams have called the Texans about a possible trade involving Johnson, but Houston has stated they have no intention to trade the 32-year-old receiver.
Many believe there is a solution to this drama that will satisfy both the Texans and Johnson. Houston could guarantee Johnson that he will be on the 2015 roster and give him an opportunity to retire as a Texan, they could pay him his $1 million bonus as a sign of good faith or they could simply hold on to him and let him sit out the entire 2014 season.
Johnson is due $10 million in 2014 and it is unknown if this latest disagreement will change his mind about attending training camp.
