NFL camps are only weeks away from opening and among the big position battles in camp, the Tennessee Titans quarterback battle is getting little attention. Projected starter Jake Locker has said all the right things through the media, but rookie Zach Mettenberger has made it clear he won’t just roll over for Locker.

Josh Gordon to be Suspended the Entire 2014?

Mettenberger spoke on SiriusXM NFL Radio and said he believes that the Titans’ starting quarterback position should be his goal this season.

“I'm coming for his job from Day 1," Mettenberger said. "That's my attitude. I'm going to make Jake work that much harder, make Charlie [Whitehurst] work that much harder, cause I'm coming everyday. And I'm bringing my best effort and my hardest work to the facility everyday to show that I shot be the guy playing."

Mettenberger was the Titans' last selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. He slipped to the sixth round due to his surgically repaired knee as well as off the field issues. The Tennessean’s Jim Wyatt, though, does not think Mettenberger will compete for the starting job this season and was surprised how the former LSU quarterback’s comments were received.

“Were these people not paying attention in May and June when Mettenberger pretty much said the same thing after the Titans drafted him?”

“Man, anything qualifies as news this time of the year. Mettenberger is not a candidate to be a starter this fall. He's competing with Tyler Wilson for the No. 3 spot behind starter Jake Locker and Charlie Whitehurst.”

Wyatt is correct in the sense that Mettenberger has sent the same message since the Titans drafted him and never steered away from the pressure. Wyatt is also correct in the sense that Whitehurst was brought in to be the key backup in the event that Locker is injured again.

RGIII Takes a Shot at Former Coach?

The Titans have covered all their bases when it comes to the quarterback position in 2014, and it would take some serious bad luck for Mettenberger to see the field. Jake Locker is entering the last year of his rookie contract and the Titans did not pick up his option for the 2015 season.
