Yankees' pitcher CC Sabathia has missed 49 games this season and was set to make his way back to New York soon, but a recent setback has forced the team to shut down Sabathia until further notice.

Sabathia has missed a significant amount of time with inflammation in his knee and all signs pointed to him making a return around the All-Star break. Sabathia was sent for an MRI Thursday after he woke up with swelling in the knee and was shut down soon after.

Yankees manger Joe Girardi spoke about Sabathia’s situation and the Yankees’ rotation going forward.

"We're waiting to see what the next step is," Girardi said. "Can't tell you how long he's going to be shut down. He said nothing during the game about it, he woke up today, and that's the report I got. Today it was swollen, similar to what he's experienced before.”

"It's not what you want," Girardi said of Sabathia. "We were hopeful the swelling would stay away and he'd be in our rotation fairly soon, but that doesn't appear to be the case.”

Sabathia had himself a tough start out in Double-A Trenton on Wednesday night. He only lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits, but never complained about any type of discomfort.

The Yankees have been the talk of the MLB when it comes to trade rumors and starting pitching. The Yankees have been rumored to be interested in the likes of the Chicago Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija and Tampa Bay Rays’ David Price. Now that Sabathia is out indefinitely, the Yankees could look to be more aggressive as the trade deadline approaches.
