In light of Jimmy Graham’s franchise tag ruling, Cleveland Browns tight end Jordan Cameron altered his Twitter bio to reflect his status with the Browns. Cameron now refers to himself as a “pass catcher” for the Cleveland Browns on his official bio.
Cameron made the subtle change soon after New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham was ruled a tight end at his grievance hearing. The ruling cost Graham $5 million due to the wide receiver franchise tag earning him $12 million instead of the $7 million he will now earn.
Cameron believed the change would go unnoticed, until ESPN’s Darren Rovell pointed out the change and Cameron wasn't too happy about it.
Cameron was wise to to change his bio as it was used against Graham in his case despite his best efforts to prove he was a receiver. The point is that players like Graham and Cameron are not tight ends in the classic sense of the position. They are hybrid players that play a pivotal role in the way the passing game has been played.
Cameron and Graham aren’t wide receivers nor are they tight ends in the NFL. The NFL would be wise to address this issue or risk more court cases like the one Jimmy Graham just endured for money he deserves.
