The Boston Red Sox have called up Jackie Bradley Jr. to their 25-man Opening Day roster. Bradley, who was among the Grapefruit League leaders in numerous offensive categories, will be in left field for Monday's season opener in New York against the arch-rival New York Yankees, manager John Farrell told ESPN Sunday afternoon.

Infielder Mauro Gomez was designated for assignment to make room for Bradley on the 40-man roster. Red Sox personnel and fans have debated the amount of playing time Bradley should have and when he should be called up for some time.

If Bradley stayed in the minors until April 12, he would not be able to acrue a year of major league service time this season, pushing his first possible year of free agency to after the 2019 season. Bradley's service-time clock still could be delayed if 20 or more days cumulatively in the minors over the course of the season.
