The Ottawa Senators have finally traded Jason Spezza, and the Dallas Stars are the winner of the sweepstakes. Spezza is the main piece in five-player deal that included a second round pick in 2015.
Spezza has made it known that he wanted out of Ottawa, but it was unclear if the Senators would be able to find a trade partner that suited both their needs and Spezza’s. The full trade is believed to be the Stars trading Alex Chiasson, Nick Paul, Alex Guptill and 2nd pick in 2015 to the Senators for Jason Spezza and Ludvig Karlsson.
Spezza is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2015 and it is unclear if the Stars will be able to sign him to a long-term contract in the near future. Spezza had 23 goals and 66 points in 75 games player this past season and has scored 251 goals, 436 assists and 687 points in 686 games. Spezza also helped the Senators to their only Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2007.
The Senators are receiving a solid haul for their former captain as they receive young talent that could prove to pay dividends for the Senators in the future.
