France 2-0 Nigeria
Goals: France—Pogba 79’, Yobo 90’+1 (own-goal)
A mildly entertaining affair saw France defeat Nigeria 2-0 on Monday. For nearly 80 minutes, Le Bleus were kept at bay by a the gritty African side. The Super Eagles failed to convert a few chances of their own. The breakthrough moment would come in the 79th minute. A header from Paul Pogba gave France the 1-0 lead. A comical own-goal from Joseph Yobo sealed the 2-0 victory just 12 minutes later.
Germany 2-1 Algeria
Goals: Germany—Schurrle 92’, Ozil 120’; Algeria—Djabou 120’+1
It took 120 minutes, but Germany was able to beat Algeria 2-1 on Monday, advancing to the quarterfinals. A frustrated German side dominated possession of the ball in the first half, but to no avail. Tactical substitutions from head coach Joachim Loew opened the affair. The goals, however, refused to come. That would change just two minutes into extra time. A world-class flick from Andres Schurrle was able to finally beat Rais M’Bolhi. Mesut Ozil sealed the victory in the dying minutes of the match.
