Kyrie Irving is on the verge of netting a max contract offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to ESPN. It has been reported the Cavs are prepared to offer the All-Star guard a five-year, $90 million deal and executives from the team are flying out to his New Jersey home in hopes of closing the deal.
The 22-year-old Irving is under contract until the end of next season, but ESPN is speculating the Cavs and owner Dan Gilbert have decided to act now as to not further alienate the 2014 All-Star Game MVP.
All season long, the Irving camp has insisted he would be willing to accept no less than a max deal, and if the Cavs are not willing to oblige he would be more than open to returning to play near his New York area home.
Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters at odd?
But now, days after landing Andrew Wiggins with the top overall pick in the 2014 draft, the Cavs have had a change of heart about Irving, another No. 1 pick from the 2011 draft.
Irving appeared in 71 games for the Cavs last season, averaging 20.8 points, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals. Irving's best season came in 2012-13, when he averaged 23 points, six assists, four rebounds and two assists. Iring has averaged at least 20 points and 5.8 assists over the last two seasons.
