In a deal that absolutely had to happen, the Milwaukee Bucks have acquired Brooklyn Nets' coach Jason Kidd in exchange for two second round picks. Kidd had burned his bridges in Brooklyn after he demanded more power over basketball operations.
The trade occurred just hours after it was reported that the Nets wouldn't budge from their original request of a first round pick. This is a deal that had to happen for both sides considering Kidd could not step back in Brooklyn after his outburst with the front office and the Bucks couldn't risk going back to coach Larry Drew after offering to give his job away.
ESPN’s Andy Katz reports that Bucks general manager John Hammond and high-ranking Bucks officials David Morway and Dave Babcock are not at risk of losing their jobs in light of Kidd becoming the teams next head coach. Former Bucks coach Drew has not spoken with ownership concerning his status with the team and it is almost a certainty that he will be let go.
Kidd will be the next head coach of the Bucks and reports are that former Grizzlies' head coach Lionel Hollins has emerged as the clear favorite for the Nets' job. The Nets are seeking stability at the position and sources believe that Hollins will bring exactly that to Brooklyn.
"In a lot of ways he makes the most sense," a league source said of Hollins. "He represents stability, and stability is very important right now. He rules with an iron fist and gets a lot out of his players, so he'd be very high on the list right now, and likely the leader.”
The Bucks land their coach in Kidd while the Nets receive two picks and open up a head coaching search on the eve of free agency.
