Tigers, Verlander Agree To Record Breaking Extension

The Detroit Tigers have reached an agreement on a new contract with their ace Justin Verlander. Sources told ESPN's Buster Olney that the deal is for seven years and worth $180 million, with an option for an eighth year that could push the deal to $202 million, making him the highest-paid pitcher in baseball.

"I love this city & the fans -- couldn't be more excited to spend my career here! We're going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!!" Verlander tweeted.

The 30-year-old right hander has been baseball's most dominant pitcher over the last four seasons, leading the league in innings and strikeouts three times, as well as wins tice and ERA once.

In 2011, Verlander went 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts. That season, he became the first pitcher to win both the Cy Young Award and MVP award in the same season, the first to do so since Boston's Roger Clemes in 1986.
