The Memphis Grizzlies have hit a snag in contract extension talks with Zach Randolph that have the two-time All-Star contemplating his contract’s early termination clause.

According to Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski, the Grizzlies and Randolph’s agent cannot find common ground on an extension thus prompting Randolph to force Memphis’ hand.

“Randolph, 32, has until June 30 to trigger a $16.5 million player option on the final season of his contract. If he opts out, he can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

An extremely popular figure in the Memphis community, Randolph has expressed a strong desire to finish his career in the city where his NBA career has truly blossomed. The Grizzlies have been trying to secure him with an extension, but the sides haven't been able to get together on the length and money of the deal.”

Randolph is a popular figure in the Memphis community and would be a huge lose for the Grizzlies on and off the court. If the Grizzlies do not sign him to a long-term contract before he opts out of his current deal, it's unlikely Randolph will return to the team.

The Grizzlies are in a rebuilding process as they are not a serious championship contender; however, they appear in the playoffs regularly. Losing Randolph would drop the Grizzlies to the bottom half of the Western Conference.

Since the July 2009 trade that sent him from the L.A. Clippers to Memphis, Randolph has averaged 17.8 points and 11 rebounds.
