The Green Bay Packers are close to reaching a long-term contract extension with quarterback Aaron Rodgers that would make the former MVP winner the highest-paid player in NFL history, league sources told ESPN. League-wide speculation is that the deal could average $25 million per year.

Neither the Packers nor Rodgers have commented publicly on a deal. However, those familiar with the contract talks believe a deal will be completed this offseason, and could happen sooner rather than later.

The former Super Bowl MVP is under contract with Green Bay through 2014, having signed a six-year, $65 million contract in October 2008. Rodgers' base salary in 2013 is $9.25 million, while his 2014 deal is worth $10.5 million.

Rodgers current contract is drastically less than those of other star quarterbacks signed recently including Joe Flacco, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, a trio of Super Bowl MVPs. Green Bay is expected to top Baltimore's agreement with Flacco, which made the quarterback the current highest played player in league history.
