The Buffalo Sabres have entered the next step in their rebuild and with the No. 2 overall pick as well as stacks of other picks, the Sabres are poised to make noise before the NHL Draft.

While the 2014 draft class lacks a certain ‘superstar’ buzz that is present in many drafts in the past, the Sabres have plenty of options that could pay dividends in the upcoming season. With the likes of Sam Bennett, Sam Reinhart and Leon Draisaitl all options for Buffalo they cannot go wrong at No. 2 overall.

The one player who could make the Sabres re-think their position at No. 2 would be Aaron Ekblad if he were to slip to the Sabres. The Toronto Maple Leafs are rumored to be enamored with the defenseman and if he were to make it past the Florida Panthers, as he is expected to, the Leafs could look to make Buffalo a huge offer.

The Sabres would love to take one of the big four at the top of the draft, but if Toronto were to make a deal that would pocket Buffalo a bigger haul for future drafts, it could be in the cards. The main problem with any deal between the two is that the Sabres could view dropping to the No. 8 overall selection too steep a price for a team that is in a rebuild.

The Sabres are no fools when it comes to dealing with the top picks in the draft and considering they tried to move up to the No. 1 overall spot this time last year, they could be geared up to take the opposite angle this time around.

The NHL Draft begins Friday, June 27
