Germany entered the World Cup as one of the overwhelming favorites to win the it all, then struck fear into the hearts of the rest of Group G with a 4-0 stunner over Portugal. Ghana, on the other hand, had unloaded 21 shots at United States goalkeeper Tim Howard but failed to convert all but one of them in a loss.
Today was supposed to be their day of reckoning in the "Group of Death," but they hung tough vs. the favored Germans in a back-and-forth affair. Germany struck first with a goal by Mario Gotze (51'), but Ghana's Andre Ayew returned the favor just three minutes later. Asamoah Gyan struck at 63' to give Ghana the advantage for a while, before Germany responded with a Miroslav Klose goal at 71'.
Ghana took it to them throughout, outshooting them 18 to 12, including six shots on goal to four. Ghana's still got a tough road to the Round of 16, but they now can't be eliminated on Sunday due to the results of the United States vs. Portugal showdown.
