The Baltimore Orioles have announced that starting catcher Matt Wieters will require Tommy John surgery and is questionable for the start of the 2015 season. O’s manager Buck Showalter announced Monday that Wieters will undergo the surgery after the elbow showed no progress.

Showalter said he was hoping for positive results from the elbow, but he knew where Wieters stood.

"We were hoping to get real lucky today, but I think we all knew where it was headed," Showalter said. "It really wasn't making a whole lot of progress.”

Showalter was mum on the idea of Wieters being ready for Opening Day 2015, but said he will be plugged right back into the lineup when he is ready. The 28-year-old Wieters is a six-year veteran and has always been a member of the Orioles. He's a two-time All-Star and has a career .275 batting average to go with 92 home runs and 346 runs batted in.

Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundley will split time as the Orioles everyday catcher as Baltimore continues to trail the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. The O’s sit five games back of the Blue Jays at 35-34 which is good for third place in the AL East.

Wieters hasn't played since May 10 and Dr. James Andrews will preform his Tommy John surgery.
