Contrary to Monday’s reports, San Francisco 49ers’ tight end Vernon Davis has skipped mandatory minicamp and will be fined by the 49ers. Davis spoke on a radio show last week and said he expected to attend the minicamp regardless of his contract situation.

Davis is seeking a new contract from the 49ers and will holdout until a new deal is reached, but was he fully expected to attend all San Francisco camps as an act of good faith. Davis was a guest writer for the MMQB on Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column.

"In 2010 I signed a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed. It was the biggest contract for a tight end in league history," Davis wrote. "Four years later, and I'm playing at a higher level than I was then, which brings me to why I'm holding out. It's all about getting paid what you deserve. It's not that complicated. I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working towards that goal, but I have to worry about my future first.”

Davis is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2016, but wants a new contract that reflects his improved play over the past few seasons. Davis currently makes an annual salary of $7,350,000, but wants more money as preparation for life after football. It is unknown what kind of figures Davis is seeking in a new contract, but the 49ers have made no indication on what they plan to do if Davis holds out into the preseason.
