Houston Texans outside linebacker and first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney had surgery for a sports hernia in Philadelphia Thursday. Head coach Bill O’Brien said Clowney is expected to be ready for training camp.
O’Brien spoke to the media and didn’t spend to long on the topic of Clowney as his injury isn't too serious.
"We just looked at it as, let's take care of it now, and he'll be ready for training camp like I said," O'Brien said. "And we're looking forward to seeing him in training camp.”
Clowney was drafted first overall by the Texans in May’s NFL draft and is highly regarded as the best defensive prospect in the last decade. It is unknown whether or not Clowney knew of the injury before the draft, but if he did it didn’t seem to bother during any pre-draft workouts.
Had Clowney known, he could had opted to wait until after the draft to receive the surgery as to not impact his draft stock in a negative light. Clowney is expected to be at 100 percent for the start of the season and is the early favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
