The WWE recently renewed Rey Mysterio's contract due to the time that he missed to injury as Vince McMahon said that he felt as though the high-flyer owed the company some time, and reports indicate that the organization may be preparing to do the same thing with CM Punk.

Fear Of More Releases Coming After WWE Lets Go Of 11 Superstars

Punk quit the company in January on the day after the Royal Rumble pay-per-view and hasn't been seen on WWE television since his departure.

McMahon renewed Mysterio's contract automatically because he missed a good chunk of time to various ailments. According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, all contracts for the WWE are written with a clause that the WWE can automatically renew the deal with the talent based on a Superstar not performing for an extended period of time due to injury or anything else.

Ultimate Warrior's Friend Trying Out For WWE

It was reported that Mysterio was looking to retire once his contract was up and that he was a bit miffed that McMahon optioned to renew his contract without negotiations, but it is all speculation.

Reports indicate that though there is not another known instance of this clause ever being used on another talent, the WWE didn't have it just in Mysterio's contract specifically due to his history with injuries, it is a part of most if not all Superstars deals.

Wrestlingheadlines.com reports that the WWE could use this clause on Punk's contract if they want once it expires in July. Punk had six months left on his deal when he opted to walk out likely due to frustration with his use and due to being burned out from travel and the constant performing schedule.

There are pros and cons to why the company would choose to renew Punk's contract with an advantage being that he wouldn't be able to sign anywhere else such as TNA and the disadvantage being that Punk has refused to work and they'd pay him for nothing.

While it's likely that the WWE won't renew the option due to the fact that Punk appears to be retired and likely has no interest wrestling for another promotion, it remains an option in case the company wants to prevent Punk from even having the option to work elsewhere.

Punk has enjoyed retired life, frequently attending Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks games and has said that he's been enjoying having free time, so it is unlikely that he will be returning to the WWE at any point in the near future even if the company did exercise the right to re-sign him.

Punk is engaged to WWE Diva A.J. Lee, who took time off to move in with him in Chicago. While the WWE could renew the "Best in the World's" deal, it remains to be seen if that will actually happen.
