Floyd Mayweather Jr. might have a large number of opponents available to him, depending on their respective relationships with departed Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, but because he plans on fighting in September there may not be enough time to lock in an unfamiliar opponent.

Mayweather's fight with Marcos Maidana in May was an exciting, rough fight that pleased most fans who watched. It was certainly more competitive a matchup than Floyd has typically been in, so worse matchups can be made than a rematch. Floyd Mayweather Sr. though is advising against a Part II.

Floyd Sr. thinks Mayweather would "whoop" Cotto

Apparently fearing some sort of injury at the hands of the Argentinian, Floyd Jr.'s dad was emphatic about leaving Maidana alone. "Floyd told me he wants that fight," Mayweather Sr. said, "but with all that kind of stuff, sometimes it's best to let things go -- a man who fights like that, especially. The guy is just a dirty fighter and anything can happen with a fight like that."

Another option might be Miguel Cotto, who recently throttled Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden in a one-sided bout for the WBC middleweight title. Cotto's fight was June 7 though, so it's unlikely he'd be healed up and able to properly train for the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world so quickly.

Floyd open to Canelo rematch despite Golden Boy split

Also, while Cotto's technically a free agent whose working with Top Rank on a fight-by-fight basis these days, he's been very loyal to them in the past. In the Cotto-Martinez post-fight press conference Top Rank president Todd DuBoef talked as if there was no question about Cotto working with Top Rank moving forward.

If that's the case, consider a Mayweather rematch over and done with. Mayweather's stated on numerous occasions his refusal to work with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, and he's eschewed tens of millions of dollars by shutting down a fight with Manny Pacquiao over his disdain for the Top Rank boss.
