While Miguel Cotto is being linked to Canelo Alvarez a lot these days, some would like to see the Puerto Rican face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a rematch of their competitive 2012 bout. While Mayweather clearly won that contest, he was in the fight for the majority of it and even managed to bloody Mayweather's nose.

Since hooking up with famed trainer Freddie Roach, Cotto's been absolutely dominant. It began with a three-round demolition of Delvin Rodriguez in 2013; he destroyed Rodriguez to the body and finished him quickly. Any talk of that win being a smokescreen against an overmatched foe was erased by Cotto's dominance of former middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Still, Roger Mayweather advised that Cotto vs. Mayweather wouldn't be what some think. "If they fought for the middleweight title, he'd [Mayweather Jr] beat him [Cotto] again," Roger told Hustleboss.com.

"Floyd has too much skill for him. If he [Bob Arum] offered enough money, Floyd could whoop his [expletive] again. He's [Cotto] not as good as they say he is. He got his [expletive] whooped [the last time he fought Floyd Jr."

Bob Arum says Mayweather would have no chance vs. new Cotto

While Floyd is unquestionably the most skilled fighter in the game, he is 37 years old and must slow down eventually. Cotto looked powerful vs. Martinez, but also displayed a dancer's footwork, and the ability to dodge or block just about everything the quick-handed Martinez threw his way.

Roach said after Cotto defeated Rodriguez that he could take Mayweather, and that sentiment would only be bolstered following the Martinez performance. "Miguel is ready to go against Mayweather. He's in the best shape of his career," Roach said at the time. "He returned to the style that he needed to go back to. And as Miguel said last week, if I had been in his corner for the first fight against Mayweather - he would have won."
