With the New York Knicks making Derek Fisher their next head coach and the Cleveland Cavaliers making waves with John Calipari rumors, what are the Los Angeles Lakers thinking at head coach? Reports have surfaced that the Lakers are putting their head coaching search on the back burner in favor of attempting to court LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.
Sam Amick of USA Today has the inside track on what the Lakers are attempting to do with their 2014.
"The slow pace of the Lakers’ coaching search that began April 30 when Mike D’Antoni resigned has been timed deliberately with the upcoming free agency period in the NBA, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Specifically, the idea that the Lakers could beat the odds and land the likes of the Heat’s LeBron James, the New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony or any of the other superstars who may be free agents on July 1 has led the Lakers to plod through their process so as to not limit their potential options. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the search."
The odds of the Lakers landing both James and Anthony is slim to none at this point. James is in the middle of another promising NBA Finals while Anthony is debating if New York is in his future. The Lakers are also not an attractive option at this point considering the amount of talent on the roster.
The NBA free agency period could be one of the more hectic in recent memory, but for that to happen the big players need to opt-out of their current deals. If and when the big players opt-out, look for the big market teams to push hard for the best of the best the NBA has to offer.
