Cross another team off the Hard Knocks list as the Cleveland Browns have declined the opportunity to take on the HBO series. The idea of getting more than your fair share of Johnny Manziel over the summer is dead after the Browns turn down HBO, but said they would be open to the show in the future.
Coach Mike Pettine commented on the series and said the Browns would no be featured in the 2014 edition.
"It was for the same reason we didn't feel super comfortable having a camera in the draft room," Pettine said, per Tom Reed of The Plain Dealer. "Let's get through the first time, let's get through the first year.”
"There are positives and negatives to doing it," Pettine said. "It's not something I would say we'd never do, partly because the league can make us do it.”
The NFL is able to force teams to do the HBO series if they meet the new rules that were put in place this year. The rules that allow a team to be exempt from appearing on the show are a team has a new head coach, has to had made the playoffs in one of the previous two seasons, or has already appeared on the show in the last 10 years.
The Browns have the option to turn down the show due to Pettine’s status as a first-year coach in Cleveland. The New York Giants and St. Louis Rams have also reported that they will not be featured on the show leaving the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers as the remaining teams that can be forced to do the show.
