Colin Kaepernick is the NFLs newest richest man as he is guaranteed a NFL record $61 million due to to his new contract. This news comes shortly after the two sides decided to sit down and start conversations on an extension. With the 49ers' established talent and a happy Kaepernick, can San Francisco contend with their new tight salary cap?

The 49ers are thrilled on their investment in Kapernick and both general manager Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh expect big things from him going forward.

"Colin's hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization," Trent Baalke said in a statement. "His work ethic, leadership and on-field production have positively influenced our team, and we look forward to his continued growth in all areas.”

Harbaugh continued the praise of Kaepernick and his 2014 expectations.

"I really expect a real breakout year for Colin. Athletically, he looks bionic," Harbaugh said during the organized team activity last week. "If you all remember 'The Six Million Dollar Man,' that's what it looks like to me. He's very gifted and he always has been. He has the look and feel of a guy who's really going to break out, even more so than he already has. I'm really excited about everything about his game right now.”

Kaepernick was a second round pick out of Nevada in 2011 and took the league by storm when Harbaugh decided to ride out the season with Kaepernick instead of former first overall pick Alex Smith in 2012. Smith was then traded out of town when the 49ers decided he wasn’t worth $7+ million a year as opposed to Kaepernick's rookie deal.

The 49ers now have to adjust to life where their quarterback eats up a decent amount of their cap space as opposed to the $1.073 million he was schedule to make this season. Like the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, the 49ers have to lock up as many of their key players as possible before Kaepernick’s contract makes that impossible.
