The New York Yankees are facing a slight problem that they haven’t had to address for the last 17 years. After closer David Robertson's horrific showing Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, could the Yankees be contemplating a switch at closer?
Robertson is the heir to the throne Mariano Rivera left vacant when he decided to call it a career, but Robertson has not lived up to the incredible expectations Rivera left behind. While Robertson has been very serviceable to this point, the Yankees don’t aim for serviceable.
After Robertson’s showing Sunday, in which he allowed five earned runs, could the Yankees look to Dellin Betances as the closer of the future? Betances has been incredible in his short time in the majors and has brought some major stability to the Yankees middle relief corps. Betances boasts an earned run average of 1.38 and has racked up 56 strikeouts in only 32.2 innings pitched. Betances has proven himself to be a dominant force in his small sample size, but what does his future hold?
It's unlikely the Yankees would take Robertson out of the fold as closer during this season. Robertson has earned his chance to prove he can be the guy to replace Rivera, but if the deed proves to big for him the Yankees could look to Betances. Betances isn't going anywhere as he is stuck as a relief pitcher after control issues ended that idea of him being a starting pitcher. Betances has looked incredible in his time in the majors and he could make a push to become the closer of the future if the Yankees decide to call on him.
Yankees 6'8" reliever Dellin Betances this year: 3-0, 1.38 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, 32.2 IP, 15 H, 56 K, 9 BB.

Betances on being a closer: “I really haven’t thought about it, because we have a guy here who does a great job.”(he is, of course, correct) — Daniel Barbarisi (@DanBarbarisi) June 1, 2014
