Up-and-coming women's tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has a message for the rest of the WTA: If you want a friend on tour, go get a dog.
Eugenie Bouchard has Bieber Fever
The No. 18 seed at the French Open reached the quarterfinals Sunday with a dominating performance against eighth-ranked Angelique Kerber, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Until now, Bouchard was known mostly for her semifinals appearance at the Australian Open earlier this year as well as a post-match interview in Melbourne in which she said her dream date is Justin Bieber. But the 20-year-old now is adding some swagger to her attack, showing she means business as she competes on the tour. She was asked to whom on the tour she feels closest.
"Best friend on tour, I don't have one," Bouchard said, according to tennis.si.com. "I don't think the tennis tour is the place to have friends. For me, it's all competition. And I think it's important to just remember that we're going to play against each other. It's not like we're teammates. To me, it's kind of more competitive."
Whether it's her youth talking or her competitive nature, Bouchard says she is in a rush to become one of the game's elite players.
"I want to be the best player I can be as quickly as possible, because one day I will wake up and I will be 30," she said Sunday, according to the New York Daily News. "I feel like since the beginning of the year I have been improving my game. Since Australia, I'm at a different level from there."
Bouchard still has some work to do to make her mark in France. She faces Carla Suarez Navarro , the No. 14 seed, in the quarterfinals Tuesday. If she wins that, a potential date with No. 7 and current French Open favorite Maria Sharapova awaits.
So far, Bouchard's plan as a lone ranger is working well. How she is received by fellow players still how she deals with her position of not wanting her tennis foes to be friends remains to be seen.
