The New York Jets' “open” competition at quarterback could be over before it even began and the winner is Geno Smith. Conflicting reports from inside the Jets’ organization say it is Smith’s job to lose and barring ‘injury or epic flop’ he will be the starter when the Jets play the Oakland Raiders Week 1.

Head coach Rex Ryan spoke to the media and said there is most definitely competition between Smith and free agent signee Michael Vick, but Smith will be hard to beat. Dom Cosentino of NJ.com had the latest on the competition from Jets’ offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg himself.

"There is competition," Mornhinweg said. "Now, it may not quite be like the competition we had last year [between Smith and Mark Sanchez], where everything was 50/50. We're trying to continue the progression with Geno, and then have Mike ready to go. It's just that simple, and Mike knows the exact expectations and roles that he has, and Geno knows the exact expectations."

Believe who you want, but it looks as if the Jets want Geno Smith to take advantage of the opportunity but don’t want him to believe he can walk into camp with the job. Michael Vick was brought in to be both a mentor and competition for the second year quarterback out of West Virginia.

According to the New York Daily News, Vick himself said he doesn’t believe it’s an open competition and you have to assume he knew that when he signed with the Jets. The Jets are coming off a surprising 8-8 season and Smith went through plenty of growing pains. Smith is the guy in New York until further notice.
