The French Open’s second round was much more eventful than usual as the Williams sisters fell Wednesday. No.1 Serena Williams and No. 29 Venus Williams join No. 2 Li Na as top talent not make the third round of the French Open.

This marks the first time in the Open era that both top seeds failed to advance to the third round and the first time the Williams sisters were eliminated on the same day since Wimbledon in 2011. Serena lost to Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-2, 6-2 as sister Venus lost to Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

"It was one of those days," Serena said. "You can't be on every day, and, gosh, I hate to be off during a Grand Slam. It happens, you know. It's not the end of the world. It is what it is.”

"Just nothing really worked. I don't know anything that actually worked."

Had the sister advanced to the third round they would had faced each other once again. Venus’ struggles go way beyond the French Open as she has been eliminated in the first or second round in eight of her last nine major tournament appearances.

"I felt like this was a match that I was most likely going to win," Venus said. "I don't know how Serena felt, but I'm sure she feels like that every time she goes on the court. So I think our expectation was to play in the next round.”

In only the second round, the French Open has already lost some major star power in the form of the Williams sisters. No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska and 2012 French Open champion Maria Sharapova advanced into the third round Wednesday.
