Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Josh Beckett tossed the first no-hitter of his career Sunday, beating the Phillies, 6-0, in Philadelphia. Beckett struck out six and walked three on 128 pitches, while lowering his ERA to 2.43.

Beckett's no-hitter is the first in the majors this year. It's also the first thrown by Dodger since Hideo Nomo accomplished the feat in Sept. 1996.

Adrian Gonzalez put the Dodgers on the scoreboard in the first, hitting a two-out double to right-center that drove in Dee Gordon. The run would prove to be the game-winner.

Beckett's performance proves that he has fully healed from season-ending surgery in July 2013. He underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. USA Today.

"Surgery has been a blessing for me," Beckett said. "You go through so many stepping stones. You gotta overcome everything. Every new thing is a new step. I overcame a lot."

Beckett (3-1) would take over from there. He kept the Phillies batters off balanced throughout the game, throwing 128 pitches -- 80 pitches were strikes. He struck out Chase Utley with 94-mph fastball to complete the game.

The previous visiting pitcher to throw no-hitter in Philadelphia was Bill Stoneman of the Montreal Expos in April 1969.

Henderson Alvarez of the Marlins was the most recent major-leaguer to toss a no-hitter, blanking the Tigers on the final day of the 2013 regular season.

A.J. Burnett took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned in seven innings. He falls to 3-4.
