Texas Rangers All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder has opted to receive surgery on his neck after earlier reports that he was still weighing his options. Fielder had being seeing a specialist concerning a herniated disc in his neck that regressed throughout the week.

Surgery was recommended to Fielder by Dr. Drew Dossett Thursday morning and after the recommendation the decision was clear. The surgery in questions requires a three- to four-month recovery period that ends Fielder’s first season in Texas.

According to Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, Fielder will seek a second opinion before going under the knife.

"I wasn't surprised, just because after talking to him and seeing him, you know this was something that was bothering him," Daniels said. "We were hoping the injection could get him through the season. His initial response was positive. But the symptoms came back.”

Daniels also believes the neck injury impacted Fielder’s power numbers that were below his career average.

"When you talk to him and when the medical staff tests his strength, he's got a real deficiency in his left arm," Daniels said. "He's much weaker in his left arm because of this disk herniation. I have no doubt it's affected his play."

Fielder was acquired by Texas in the offseason when the team traded longtime second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. Fielder is the latest Ranger to go down with injury, making him the fortieth Texas player in the disabled list this season.
