Johnny Manziel, Johnny Football or Johnny Cleveland. It doesn’t matter what you call him because he is just “rookie” at Browns organized team activities. Manziel is adjusting to life as a rookie and now he has to adjust to being third on a Browns depth chart.
According to Browns general manager Ray Farmer, the battle between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel isn't even close at the moment. When asked about the placement of Manziel on the depth chart and the quarterback battle in general, Farmer was blunt and said that Hoyer is simpily better than Manziel 'by a substantial margin’.
Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer caught up with Hoyer and got his point of view in the early goings of the quarterback battle.
There's only one guy out there. (But) I wouldn't put too much into it. I don't think we're in there not being friendly. But when you're gunning for the same job there is a little bit of an edge to it.
It’s fine to say that Hoyer is ahead of Manziel in the early going, but it just feels as if the Browns are pushing the idea of Manziel being a backup too hard. The Browns drafted Manziel to be the quarterback of the future, there is no doubt about that, but this early in the process it goes without saying that experience trumps pure instinct.
It’s a matter of when, not if, Manziel starts for the Browns and you have to believe Hoyer knows that. At this point in his career, Hoyer is interviewing for his next job and could pull an Alex Smith and become a adequate starting quarterback post-Cleveland.
