It looks like UConn basketball head coach Kevin Ollie will not be humoring NBA teams after all as he will likely sign a five-year contract extension with the Huskies that will give him a significant raise as well.
Ollie is still in negotiations with the Huskies although he is expected to get a huge bump in salary to about $3 million a season. Ollie originally signed a seven month contract to replace Jim Calhoun as the UConn basketball coach, but then he earned a five-year contract that was worth $7.5 million.
Two years ago Kevin Ollie was an assistant coach at UConn. Now he's making 3 million a year and coming off a national title. Amazing. — Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) May 19, 2014
Ollie’s raise is a direct reward for the Huskies winning the national championship and the schools fourth championship since 1999. The rumored deal would make Ollie the highest-paid coach in the American Athletic Conference.
No surprise Kevin Ollie staying at UConn, per @WojYahooNBA. Ollie has told people he plans to be very picky about a possible NBA job. — Chris Mannix (@ChrisMannixSI) May 19, 2014
Ollie was rumored to have been pursued by the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, but Ollie was straightforward when he said he would be very picky about where he would want to coach professional basketball. If Ollie os to pursue an NBA coaching job, look for it to be of his choosing over the life of his new deal at the University on Conniticut.
