Updating a earlier story from Sports World News, California Chrome has done it again and has put himself in a position to be the next Triple Crown winner and the first one since Affirmed in 1978. The New York Racing Association stewards has made their decision and will allow Chrome to race in the Belmont with his nasal strip.

The owners of California Chrome had to make a formal request for permission to use the nasal strip and not even 24 hours later they have their answer. Trainer Art Sherman said after the Preakness that if Chrome was not allowed to wear the strip that the owners should consider not racing him at all.

"I'd have to leave it up to the owners," he said Sunday. "I know they'll be upset.”

Sherman explained what the strip does and won’t have to cross that bridge in deciding whether or not Chrome should run

"I think it opens up his air passage and gives him that little extra oomph that he needs, especially going a mile and a half," Sherman said. "Anytime you can have a good air passage, that means a lot for these thoroughbreds.”

Since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, 12 horses have won the first two legs of the crown only to fall short at Belmont. California Chrome looks to break the streak, but it all starts with getting his nasal strip approved. The Belmont Stakes will take place June 7 and Chrome is projected to enter the race as the favorite with even odds.
