The most hyped college player to join the NFL in recent years, Johnny Manziel, admits he needs to prove his worth first before even getting the starting quarterback duties for the Cleveland Browns as he joined the team's rookie minicamp this weekend.
He told reporters covering the mini-camp, via The Associated Press: "I'm a rookie. I need to earn my place. I need to earn my keep. Nothing here needs to be handed to me. I don't need to be treated based off what I did in the past, because that doesn't mean a thing at this level."
Manziel also said he's comfortable with the Browns, adding: "I liked the situation here and I wanted to come here, and if they wanted to take me and were trying to get me earlier, I said, 'Let's do it.' I don't know what kind of influence that had or what exactly that did."
He also clarified recent reports that he texted quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains during the NFL draft and urging the Browns to pick him immediately, saying that he wanted to "wreck this league." It can be remembered that Cleveland traded up to take Johnny Football at number 22. Manziel said he did exchange text messages with Loggains but he was not sure if he used the term 'wreck this league' saying: "I don't know if that's exactly word for word. It was something along those lines."
He was also far from the flamboyant person that the media has been reporting him to be, saying he just wants to help his club win some games. "Whenever it is I get a chance to play, I don't want to come in and be mediocre. " he said.
