With rumors swirling that Steve Kerr and the New York Knicks were close to finalizing a deal this week that would see Kerr come in as the team's new coach, the Golden State Warriors aren't going down without a fight and are planning to re-engage with Kerr in hopes he'll jump aboard.
Lakers Have Yet To Begin Their Coaching Search
According to ESPN, the Knicks remain the favorite to land the TNT broadcaster as their head coach, but the Warriors are still hoping to talk with Kerr again in order to sway him to the west coast.
ESPN cited a source that said they'd be "shocked" if the Knicks don't land Kerr, but there is no timetable for the team to ink their new coach to a deal following the dismissal of Mike Woodson.
Talks Between Kerr, Knicks Heat Up
Kerr, who continues to work for TNT as the process is ongoing, has a great relationship with Knicks team president Phil Jackson, which has led to him being the favorite to land the job. The talks were reportedly in the "final stages" this week but nothing has been made official.
The Warriors reached out to Kerr after they fired Mark Jackson last week but it seems as though he may have already decided to join New York. The Warriors shifted their focus from Kerr to Stan Van Gundy after the talks between the Knicks and the broadcaster got deep, however once Van Gundy agreed in principle to a deal with the Detroit Pistons, Golden State shifted its sights back to Kerr.
The Warriors have acknowledged that the Knicks are a heavy favorite to land Kerr given that Kerr played for and won three titles under Jackson with the Chicago Bulls. Kerr has never coached before but he was the general manager of the Phoenix Suns.
Golden State was hoping to use the close proximity to Kerr's hometown of San Diego and the fact that they're coming off of a 51-win season while New York had a disastrous 37-win season as a selling point for Kerr, but it appears as though the chances are slim for the Warriors to land him.
"Unless something changes," a source told ESPN, "the relationship with Jackson is a very big part of this, and that's the way it looks like it will go."
