Donald Sterling sat down with Anderson Cooper to clear the air in his first public appearance since his rant about African Americans. Sterling went on television to make his case that he isn't a racist and is sorry for his one-time mistake. Nothing went as planned for Donald Sterling and it is another black eye for the NBA.
Instead of apologizing to Magic Johnson on television, Sterling took the opportunity to take a much more subtle jab at the Hall of Famer.
"If I said anything wrong, I'm sorry. He’s a good person. I mean, what am I going to say? Has he done everything he can do to help minorities? I don't think so. But I'll say it, he's great, but I don't think he's a good example for the children of Los Angeles.”
Sterling’s interview was just one statement after another of banter bordering on nonsense and question dodging that eventually led to Sterling giving Johnson the backhanded complement. Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers commented on the “apology” by Sterling and clearly didn't think much of the interview.
"Obviously I know who Magic is. I’ll stand by Magic every day of the year because I've known him for a long time. Having said that, I don't know what's going on out there. I tried not to get involved in that part of it right now. Whatever it is, that doesn't sound like much of an apology to me.”
Donald Sterling and his estranged wife each are leading a claim that they should continue to own the team. The owners have yet to meet to discuss and vote on Sterling’s fate, but many reports think the vote will be 29-0 in favor of banning Sterling.
